Jade was special in the eyes of the Chinese.It has become the sprite of the Chinese beyond the taxology.
For normal people jade was a kind of stone. It can be divided into two kinds:soft jade and hard jade.The traditional Chinese jades were almost soft jades including Xinjiang jade and You jade.It was after Wusangui controlled Yunnan in early Qing dynasty where produced hard jades a lot,the hard jade became popular in China.Early in the Old stone age,Chinese ancestors found jade was hard,they began to use it.Then,they decorated something with it because they found the jade had great colour.Because the jade was few and hard to be produced,so just some dignified person could use it,so step by step,it became a sign of power and property.What we see today the most ancient jade works were knives,needles and axes.Then some dragons and pigs appeared to be totems.Maybe some were not made of real jades,sometimes it was made of some beautiful stones.To the late of New stone age,it was rare to see that people used jade to make tools.It was very popular to use soft jades for decoration.Then to Tang dynasty,jade was a proper thing for emperor families.In Song dynasty,the technology of making jades became easier,then jade became popular among normal people.Some delicate jade productions appeared at that time.In Ming and Qing dynasty,the making of jade became to the top,all kinds of jade productions appeared.White jade was the most precious,then yellow,then blue.When then green jade came into China,all the people loved it soon.It became a fashion using it to decorate.In the eyes of traditional Chinese,the green jade was inferior to ancient jade.Now,when we take a green jade,we will say its colour,texture and its making,but when we take an ancient jade,we will have a kind of pride of our nationality.The resean is that the ancient jade include the spirit of China of 5,000 years.
